Calderaine started as nine tables in a rented hall and grew into a full-service hotel, casino and event venue in Newtown. The people, the numbers and the creed behind the house — all offline, all in person, all at 7626 144 Ave NW.
How Calderaine grew, in four acts

The first shuffle
Nine blackjack tables opened in a rented hall off 118th Avenue under the name Calderaine. The promise was simple: real dealers, cash play, no machines pretending to be cards. On opening night, the first customer walked out with $400 and became a regular for the next six years.
The original nine tables are long gone, but the pit boss from that first night still trains new dealers on Tuesday mornings.
Rooms above the tables
The 128-room hotel wing opened above the original hall. Guests who used to drive home after 2 a.m. started staying the night — and stayed longer. The quiet-wing design was built after one regular complained he could hear the slot machines from bed.
That complaint became the design brief for every room in the building.
The floor doubles, the kitchen arrives
We doubled the casino floor to 600 slots and 40 tables and opened The Ember Room with 95 seats and a dry-aging cooler. The same year, the private gaming salon took its first booking — a corporate birthday that has returned every March since.
2021 was also the year we crossed one million guests welcomed.
A full-service house
The conference hall, the spa and the presidential suite completed the building. Calderaine became a venue where a company can hold a morning AGM, feed 200 at lunch, run a private salon that night and put the executives in suites above the action.
Today the building never closes. It has 160 staff and one switchboard that always connects to a human.

We hire for hospitality first and skills second. A dealer can learn blackjack; kindness is harder to teach. Our onboarding lasts three weeks and ends with a shadow shift on the floor.
Three builds that changed the house
Every major expansion of Calderaine came with a design problem: how do you add more people without losing the face-to-face feel? These are the three projects that answered it.
The 2016 hotel wing: putting beds above the felt
A five-storey, 128-room concrete-and-glass wing was built directly above the existing casino hall — without closing the floor below. The acoustic isolation became the quiet-wing standard we still use.
We poured the third floor while a full blackjack pit ran underneath. The soundproofing details saved the project — guests never knew there were 400 slots two floors down.
2021 Floor Expansion
Doubling slots and tables while keeping the floor open. The poker room glass wall was added to separate sound without killing the view.
2025 Conference Hall
A 220-seat hall and three breakout rooms connected by a service corridor to the Ember Room kitchen. Built for day meetings that turn into evening events.
2025 Lower-Level Spa
Steam, salt and two treatment suites one floor below the lobby. The biggest challenge was not the plumbing — it was making the casino feel miles away.
